D’Arranged Marriage is the story of Sanjay Gupta, the New Zealand born son of Indian immigrants Manhur and Pushpa. 29-year-old Sanjay lives at home, works in his father’s corner shop, dreams of a career in stand-up comedy, and strenuously avoids the issue of an arranged marriage. His nagging parents finally get the better of him, but to his surprise, he discovers that Neenu, the prospective bride, is the one! Unfortunately, complications (and hilarity) ensue…With all 8 characters performed by one versatile actor, you have the funniest parody of Indian family life since Bend it Like Beckham, and what critics have dubbed a “roller coaster ride to laughsville.”
“This charmer of a love story, richly min[es] the Indian background of the tale while reveling in everything that makes it universal. It’s performed by the inordinately talented Rajeev Varma…it’s also a sweet, lovely, and good-humored story of love against the odds that turns out well. This is the perfect show for date night.” – nytheatre.com, May 2010
“Don’t credit the liquor for everyone’s bursting with explosive laughter. Varma could get just as strong a reaction at an A.A. meeting …Varma commands an audience’s attention…” – Tribeca Tribune, April 2009
“Hilarious…a cultural comedy classic…” – Dominion Post, New Zealand
